# plainkit.tools - free private text tools

> Free in-browser text tools: strip invisible characters from AI text and mask names, emails, and phone numbers before you share. No signup, nothing uploaded.

plainkit.tools (https://plainkit.tools/) hosts two free tools that run entirely in the browser. Nothing is uploaded and no account is needed.

## Tools

- [Text cleaner](https://plainkit.tools/text-cleaner): paste ChatGPT or Word text and copy the clean version. Strips zero-width spaces and hidden Unicode, normalizes smart quotes, long dashes, and odd spacing.
- [PII masker](https://plainkit.tools/pii-masker): paste text or JSON and copy the masked version. Covers names, emails, phone numbers, addresses, IDs, and passwords; JSON stays valid.

Not sure which one? If pasted text misbehaves (search misses a visible word, JSON rejects the paste), use the Text Cleaner. If the text names real people and you want to share it, use the PII Masker. For both, clean first, then mask.

## FAQ

## Which tool do I need: Text Cleaner or PII Masker?

Use the Text Cleaner when pasted text misbehaves: search cannot find a visible word, JSON or code rejects the paste, or diffs show phantom changes. Use the PII Masker when the text is fine but it names real people: cover names, emails, phone numbers, addresses, IDs, and passwords before you share it or paste it into an AI tool. Run the cleaner first, then the masker, when you need both.

## Are these tools free? Do I need an account?

Yes, free, and no account. Both tools run entirely in your browser. No signup, no upload.

## Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. Cleaning and masking happen locally on the page with JavaScript running on your device. Closing the tab discards the text. The hosting only sees aggregate page-view counts, never what you pasted.

## Will the Text Cleaner change my wording or hide AI authorship?

No. It normalizes typography and strips invisible Unicode carriers while leaving visible words unchanged. It does not paraphrase, does not defeat statistical watermarks, and does not fool AI detectors, which judge word choice rather than characters.

## Will the PII Masker catch everything?

No. It is a fast local checker, not a guarantee: it catches clear shapes like emails, phones, links, addresses, dates, and ID or account numbers, but it can miss a detail with no clear shape, such as a school name in a sentence. Always glance at the highlights before you share.

## Can I use these tools programmatically or offline?

There is no HTTP API. For programmatic use, take the MIT-licensed detypo engine and CLI from the public source repository. In the browser, both tools work offline once the page has loaded.
